THE HEALING POWER OF MEDITATION.
Many years ago, I worked for a short while as a therapist in a community mental health clinic. When my colleagues learned that I had been practiced meditation for over 20 years, they decided to do a little test. They sat me down in a quiet room, put electrodes on my scalp, and hooked me up to an EEG machine. Then they asked me to simply sit, close my eyes, and begin to meditate in my own way. Just as soon as I began the meditation in my usual way, with the easy, gentle, unforced mental repetition of my mantra (a word or phrase used as a focus) I could hear their surprised exclamations, “Oh my God, she’s already in theta!!”
I wasn’t doing anything special, I was simply meditating the way I’d been taught. But over 20 years of sitting twice a day and doing this, my brain had been trained. A new neural pathway was grooved in, so that the moment I had the intention to sit to meditate, there were already brain changes going on. And even deeper changes occurred when I actually started the meditation.
Theta is a brain wave state in which your body is asleep but your mind stays awake. It’s a potent state for change. Your brainwaves go into a more orderly and coherent wave pattern than they are in your usual awake state or even in your sleep state.
Here’s what Dr. Joe Dispenza says in his book, Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself.
“One of the later steps of meditation, if you keep practicing, is to move into the Theta-wave frequency, when your body is asleep, but your mind is awake. This is a magical land. You are now in a deeper system of the subconscious and able to immediately change…negative associations to positive ones… In Theta…you are free to dream, change subconscious programs, and finally create from a totally unobstructed place…you are working in a realm of true power.”
And here’s the kicker in my meditation story. Just eight weeks after I started a regular practice of twice-a-day meditation, the horrible and debilitating panic attacks which had plagued me for more than a few years simply vanished, and decades later they have never returned.
As an empath, I suffered from childhood with what they called ‘a nervous stomach’. The family doctor prescribed an anti-spasmodic medication. That’s what they did ‘in those days’. It was anxiety pure and simple, and distressing to say the least. Meditation altered that as well, along with my deep personal psychotherapy work. It’s been decades since I have experienced anxiety like that. My belly and my mind are generally very peaceful and at ease.
At this point I have been a meditator for 47 years. In my twenties I was drawn to read and learn all I could find about Eastern religions and practices. And a friend of mine with similar interests insisted that I go with him to the meditation center to learn Transcendental Meditation. And I did. It is a practice which I instantly fell in love with, and have effortlessly carried forth since that first day. And I am forever grateful for this life-altering habit.
Meditation is a natural state for humans, we are wired for it. There are countless ways to meditate to access this state; prayer is one of the most common ones. And I have experienced many of them since learning TM. As a small child, my maternal grandmother took me everywhere with her. And when we were in church, with the candles burning and the incense wafting and the silence and the soft whispers of women praying while clicking rosary beads, I would easily fall into this same natural meditative state.
I loved it then, I love it still. It is Home for me.
