What Do You Do When Life Gives You Tangerines?

June 16, 2025 by Janice Masters Leave a Comment

Let’s start with the obvious. We’re all familiar with the phrase, “When life gives you lemons.” Yep, I get it. And at the same time—as many of you may know—I’m a true fan of Korean dramas. I watch them on Netflix… and I love them. They’re so well-written, and the acting is fabulous.

So here’s the twist: the Korean phrase that uses tangerines where the American phrase uses lemons means exactly the same thing. What do you do when there’s a stick in your bicycle spokes? What do you do when things don’t go the way they’re “supposed to”?

Let me share a recent example from my own life.

I live in South Florida, and it’s summertime—which means it’s HOT. Temps in the 90s every afternoon. Whew!!

So last week, as we were getting ready for bed, my husband said, “Oh, you know… I don’t think the AC is working right now.” He went outside, came back in, and said, “Yep… I think the outside unit is dead.”

Okay, so here’s where the tangerines and lemons come in… 😅

Which only means: “Okay. So what do you do next?”

I could walk you through all the steps with the AC tech coming, blah blah blah… But here’s what we did immediately: we have two stand-alone AC units, and we placed one in each of the two main bedrooms we use. So, first we did what needed to be done to ensure a certain level of comfort until we could actually get the house AC repaired.

Now here’s where you come in.

How good are you at taking a beat? Sitting down and catching your breath when things—big or small—don’t go the way they’re supposed to?

Let’s be real. Maybe first you get pissed off and swear 😡😊 (which is totally fine for a minute—or let’s face it—even a few hours!).

But I bring this up because it’s worth looking at how we respond when life goes off the rails. When the plan unravels. The truth is, none of us walks around with a master guidebook for what to do when everything goes wrong. We’re intuitive beings. Sometimes, the “what to do next” comes instantly. We just know: “Okay, that’s the direction to go,” and we move forward.

That’s the small stuff.

You know… Don’t sweat the small stuff? (Yeah, that book.)

Okay, well, I sort of hate to do this to you, but I’m going to save the big stuff for next time. Because I imagine that even when it comes to the small stuff, you might need a moment… maybe even a few beats 😉. But still—you figure out what to do next.

What I’m saving for next time is when life really derails us.

I mean—forget lemons and tangerines!!

To use one of my favorite metaphors: when life throws a huge stick into your bicycle spokes, and you go flying over the handlebars… and whether literally or figuratively, you crash.

I bet there isn’t one of you reading this who hasn’t experienced a moment like that.

So we’ll dig into that next week. And we’ll do something meaningful with it—because that’s when we’re being invited into spiritual evolution. Into awakening. Into ascending.

And that’s one of my very favorite things to write about, talk about, and reflect on in my own life.

So I invite you: reply to this email. Tell me about one major challenge you’ve been through. I’d love to hear from you.

I hope you’re having a marvelous week, and I’ll be talking to you again next week.
