Walking is a Gift. Gratitude is the Thank You Note.

April 30, 2019 by Janice Masters Leave a Comment

YES, YOU CAN! AND BE SURE TO BE KIND ALONG THE WAY.

I pushed past an upper limit, a temporary personal glass ceiling (a PGC) this morning!!

Until this past November I used to brag that I hadn’t had a back problem for almost forty years… and then…ouch!

For the past four decades, I have enjoyed walking miles and miles and miles enjoying every step of it. But back in November I hurt my back, had a sciatica flare up and was in a lot of pain in my lower back and hips.  I had to stop walking, biking, yoga classes, and was literally hobbling, hanging onto furniture to walk at home. I did what i knew to do…rest, icing, stretches, inner body work, etc… and slowly started improving. Then I got acupuncture treatments, and then chiropractic which is what helped me recover from a similar injury four decades ago. I also engaged in a lot of dialogue with my back and hips.

Yesterday I cancelled any further chiropractic sessions, and this morning I decided to go out walking for the first time.  All along, I’ve been walking as I could, in the pool and pushing a shopping cart, I have not been sedentary but hadn’t done any of my former intentional walking.

So….drum roll!! Today I walked a solid mile in my shady breezy neighborhood and admired the greenery, the palm trees, and the mango trees laden with their heavy fruits. I am thrilled! I gave myself a ton of “ATTA GIRLs” and I will walk again later….that mile was my ‘test run’ and it was successful!! I will do my pool miles later too…they are always pure joy with my music playing.

I have learned to take recovery slowly and not push it as soon as I start to feel better. I have my wonderful late mom’s words in my ears…”Don’t overdo it Janice, just because you’re feeling better.” Thanks Mom, you’re so right!

So, whatever personal glass ceiling (PGC) or temporary upper limit you’re experiencing in any area of your life, set yourself an intention to get past it, know that it is temporary, be kind as you move toward your intention, and celebrate every step along the way. Take it easy and keep on going.

One of the gifts of this recent back pain has been the incredible gratitude and appreciation I have been feeling as the improvement continued, and I went from literally hobbling in pain, to feeling like my strong, healthy, vibrant self again. I am aware that not everyone gets to recover fully from any number of things.  I don’t take any of my wonderful life for granted…except maybe running water…I do forget to appreciate that sometimes. The truth is, I can always up-level my gratitude and appreciation too!

Gratitude and Appreciation change your brain, your heart,  your relationships, and your life. Indulge generously!!

Please tell me your recovery and success stories in the Comments section below. I look forward to reading them.

I love you…

And as always, I hope you SPARKLE!!

Warmly,
Jan xoxo
