Empaths: I invite you to feed your body, as well as you do your soul!

February 17, 2026 by Janice Masters Leave a Comment

Cooking, food, creativity, sharing… these are all part of our human experience, and as empaths, we are connected energetically. Food, certainly, is a big part of how we connect energetically. This month, I’m sharing one of my… and my family’s… all-time favorite recipes: authentic Sicilian Tomato Sauce and Meatballs, aka Sugu cu Purpetti.

I know some people call it “Sunday sauce,” but MY mom made “sauce” every Thursday AND every Sunday. How lucky were we!!

Here I share with you the recipes for both the sauce and the meatballs! Abbondanza! Right? I can just hear my Grandma Mastrosimone saying, “I’ma hopa you like!” 😍

JAN’S RECIPES FOR SAUCE & MEATBALLS:

SAUCE:

2 (28 oz) cans of whole tomatoes with juice (put through a blender)

  • 2 cans water
1 can tomato paste + 3 cans water (stir well into sauce)
2–3 garlic cloves (minced and fried until just golden in the oil)
    3 T olive oil
    1/4 c fresh basil (or 1 T dried)
1 tsp salt + ground black pepper
    1/4 tsp baking soda

Bring to a boil, stir well, then turn down to a simmer.

MEATBALLS:
(Set oven to 400°)

2 lbs ground turkey or ground beef
2 eggs
4 slices stale bread, soaked in water, squeezed dry, and crumbled into the meat
1/2 c Progresso Italian breadcrumbs
1/3 c grated Pecorino Romano cheese
1 T dried basil
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp salt + ground pepper

Mix all of this very gently with your hands. (My mom would always say, “Not too rough with your hands or the meatballs will be tough.”)

Prepare a large sprayed baking sheet.
Make 2-inch meatballs and place them on the baking sheet. Spray very lightly with olive oil.
Bake for 15 minutes.

When done, place them into the simmering sauce, partially covered, for at least an hour.

Cook the pasta of your choice al dente, preferably an Italian brand, as they don’t spray their wheat crops, as is done in the US.

We grate Pecorino Romano cheese liberally onto our pasta. 😉

MANGIA BENE! EAT WELL!

I’d love it so much if you let me know when you make all this and how you enjoy it! I’m thrilled to share it with you!! Leave a comment below!
