I love watching the show, Long Island Medium. It fills my heart, makes me laugh, and usually brings tears to my eyes to see how relieved her clients are to hear loving, validating messages from their loved ones who have died. Last night as I was watching, something occurred to me. As a therapist for over two decades, and then a spiritual coach for almost two more, I have frequently had my clients engage in what we call the “empty chair” technique. This simply requires imagining the person they want to dialogue with sitting in that empty chair across from them and then allowing their intuitive inner being to guide them in that conversation. I typically have the person shift back and forth from one chair to the other, basically playing both parts in the dialogue.
Now, while my intuitive and psychic gifts are many, dialoguing with dead people is not among them…at least not professionally. J However, I do know how to help get people in touch with what their heart longs for, what would be the most healing words they could hear, and what messages would lay painful issues to rest once and for all. Many’s the time that I have had a client dialogue with a loved one who has died… sometimes they died a long time ago…and what is always amazing to me is that an openhearted client can allow herself to hear exactly the words that she needs to hear. Is she channeling her loved one? Is she imagining what her loved one would say? Is she making it up? What I’ve learned is that IT DOESN’T MATTER!! In our culture we have no adequate words and no validation for the many levels of reality we are able to access and how we are able to access them. We just do it. And we follow our innate sense of the ‘truth’ of it. And as for me, I trust it.
That is what Teresa Caputo, The Long Island Medium does as well. In whatever way she does it, and she’s done it since she was a small child, she is brilliantly able to access, bring forth and articulate the messages that will bring peace to the heart of her clients. She is able to utter the words that will allow them to let go, once and for all, of the worry and the lack of closure, and the nagging fear that somehow things are not right, not okay. And she does so with details about the departed loved one that are ‘proof’ that their soul is present. You can actually see her client’s relief and you can feel it yourself, and I think our tears as we watch this come from our ability to relate to the need for that same kind of relief.
The work that I do is about helping women to thrive and succeed in their lives. And a vital aspect of this work is helping them to heal past heartbreak that is keeping them from moving forward in their lives in the present. A powerful experience that changes everything comes out of facilitating the process that allows them to hear the words the heart longs for, the words that will be a soothing balm to their broken heart. Does this make heartbreak go away? Of course not. But I have witnessed time and time again that it makes no difference if those soothing words that bring relief come from the mouth of a psychic medium…or from our own mouth in an “empty chair” dialogue, because the heart always recognizes the message it has been waiting and longing and yearning for. The healing message. There is no mistaking the feeling of the pain giving way, the heart opening, and the deep sense of relief we feel.
I have facilitated my clients’ “empty chair” dialoguing with someone who has died, with a person from a past life, with someone they are estranged from, with someone they feel bitterness toward, with someone they feel has not forgiven them, or vice versa. And when we reach the level of the heart being open, the messages that come through are all the same. They are about love, unconditional love, forgiveness, acceptance, soothing and reassuring….always. And a wave of relief washes over them.
One of my amazing clients recently shared a pivotal dream with me, and with her permission I share it with you. Here’s what she wrote:
“I was in this eclectic restaurant/club environment and was sitting at this large table…with a lady and a child. The child was a little boy with the most beautiful blonde hair…kind of long. And though he was a child, he was like talking to an adult/soul spirit. He was upset and really sad because he was talking about “his wife Madeline”. She just disappeared and he never heard from her again nor spoke with her. He was telling me this and in the dream it didn’t compute. (How can he have a wife and be talking like an adult?). But I leaned over to him and asked “what if it’s ok just to not know what happened (or why) and remember what was good?” When I told him this he got a huge smile on his face and gave me the biggest hug. When I woke up after that and his hug, I actually felt hugged and that I resolved something for him.
I share this with you because it almost feels like a deep message from my soul and tied to our last session. It also felt like a past life friend or soul. Even though I was myself at the table talking to this child- there was something to this. Obviously part of that message is it’s ok to let the wonder and hurt go…that we don’t always understand the why or we don’t have the answers to the question.”
As she and I processed the dream, it was clear that this was a message from a past self of hers and had to do with a relationship that existed in that lifetime…and this this life was broken, ended, leaving her with heartbreak and sadness. Here is what some of my reply was…and she resonated totally with it, and several days later, reports that she feels something deep and fundamental has been healed by this dream/visitation.
“That is a most beautiful dream. And my take on it is that you were making contact with your soul from a past life in that blonde a little boy…and that perhaps his wife Madeline was your ex’s soul! The really amazing and wonderful thing is that you were resolving the current issue forward from the past. This is how healing happens when we access it, backwards and forwards in time, across time and space. I love the WHAT IF…? that you created in the dream! Just brilliant! I think your soul just took a quantum leap into healing with this dream!”
Once we understand and accept that we walk with grief in one way or another, to one level or another our entire lives, then we can relax, stop trying to fix it, and let ourselves be joyful and thrive and succeed…even as we ride out the waves of grief. This is made so much easier when we can release the fear, the worry, the ongoing pain of thinking that something is wrong and that we can’t move forward until it is ‘fixed’. Nothing needs fixing. Everything you need resides within you. And you get to thrive and succeed and enjoy life even as you genuinely grieve your heartbreak.
So while I don’t call myself The Miami Medium J, I am The Shaman Mama and I do know how to guide the journey to these precious places in which the heart and soul are able to access healing words, deep relief, and the love that surpasses everything else. You can’t sweep your heartbreak and grief under the rug and expect it not to trip you up. Together we can bring it out, shine the light and allow healing to occur. It’s time. You’re worth it.
As always, I hope you SPARKLE!
